BMW Launches M440i Convertible In India, Unveils X6 Return

By Artūras Malašauskas May 04, 2026 3 min read Share:
BMW has introduced the M440i Convertible in India at ₹1.09 crore while announcing the X6's return to the market with V8 powertrain options.

The German automaker BMW has made a dual announcement in the Indian market, launching the M440i Convertible while simultaneously unveiling the return of the X6 coupe-SUV. The M440i Convertible enters the market at ₹1.09 crore, replacing the Z4 in BMW's India portfolio as a more comprehensive open-top package.

According to the launch details from ABP News, the M440i Convertible is powered by a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo-petrol engine producing 374hp and 500Nm of torque. The soft-top roof mechanism operates in 18 seconds, a practical improvement over hard-top convertibles that often require more time and space to deploy.

Inside, the cabin features a 14.9-inch touchscreen paired with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Standard equipment includes a heads-up display, 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, and powered seats. The vehicle comes with all-wheel drive as standard, which matters significantly for Indian driving conditions where monsoon traction can be unpredictable.

The X6 return marks a strategic move in BMW's premium SUV lineup. The model will arrive in India exclusively in M60i form, featuring a twin-turbo V8 petrol engine with a mild-hybrid system. This positions it directly against the Mercedes-Benz GLE 53 AMG, a competitor that has dominated the performance coupe-SUV segment for years.

For context on the X6's global positioning, the current generation in the United States starts at $78,750 for the xDrive40i variant with a 375-horsepower inline-six. The M60i version jumps to $99,450 with a 523-horsepower V8, according to Car and Driver specifications. The price premium for the V8 is substantial—roughly $20,000 more than the six-cylinder—which raises questions about whether the extra power justifies the cost for most buyers.

The X6's design philosophy prioritizes style over utility. The sloped roofline reduces cargo capacity and rear passenger headroom compared to the mechanically identical X5. This is a tradeoff some buyers accept willingly, but it's worth noting that you're paying thousands extra for a shape that sacrifices practicality. The interior quality remains high, with soft-touch surfaces and upscale materials throughout.

Performance metrics show the xDrive40i can reach 60 mph in 5.2 seconds, while the M60i drops that to 4.2 seconds. Both come with adaptive dampers and wheel sizes ranging from 20 to 22 inches. The V8 version has a firmer suspension setup, though testing has shown it never becomes genuinely punishing on public roads.

Looking ahead, insider information suggests the next-generation X6 (codenamed G66) may arrive in 2028 with seven variants, including an all-electric iX6. However, BMW has not officially confirmed these details, and the information comes from industry insiders rather than official channels. The current X6 remains unchanged for 2026 except for a new Tanzanite Blue metallic paint option.

The M440i Convertible's positioning in India is interesting given the pricing. At ₹1.09 crore, it sits firmly in the luxury segment where buyers expect both performance and exclusivity. The soft-top design choice over a hard-top reduces weight and complexity, though it does mean less insulation when the roof is up compared to a retractable hardtop.

Both vehicles represent BMW's continued commitment to the premium performance market, even as the industry shifts toward electrification. The mild-hybrid system in the X6 M60i is a stopgap measure rather than a full transition to electric powertrains. Whether this strategy satisfies buyers who want performance without compromise remains to be seen.

The real question is whether Indian buyers will pay the premium for the X6's styling over the more practical X5, and whether the M440i Convertible can justify its price tag against established rivals. The market will decide, but BMW is betting that the combination of brand prestige, performance, and design language will be enough to close deals.
