Hyundai Unveils Production-Ready MobED Robot Platform at iREX 2025
Hyundai Motor Group Robotics LAB unveiled MobED (Mobile Eccentric Droid), its first mass-produced mobility robot platform, at the International Robot Exhibition 2025 (iREX 2025) in Tokyo, Japan, from December 3-6, 2025. The platform represents a significant milestone in Hyundai's robotics development, evolving from a concept shown at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2022 into a production-ready solution using artificial intelligence.
According to the official press release, MobED introduces a three-pillar approach to robotics functionality: Adaptive Mobility (hardware), Intuitive Autonomy (software), and Infinite Journey (applications). The platform features an eccentric posture control mechanism that dynamically adjusts height and maintains level positioning on uneven surfaces, eliminating the need for environment-specific robot designs.
MobED's technical foundation includes AI-based autonomous navigation, LiDAR-camera fusion sensors for real-time environmental perception, and Drive-and-Lift (DnL) modules that integrate posture control, driving, and steering motors for seamless multi-directional movement. The platform's design embodies Hyundai's "Refined Edge" philosophy, balancing straight lines expressing robust purpose with flowing curves that enhance dynamic movement perception.
The MobED platform is available in two configurations: MobED Pro and MobED Basic. The Pro model features autonomous driving capabilities, GNSS antenna, and advanced obstacle detection with LiDAR and RADAR, while the Basic model offers simplified functionality for specific applications. Both models demonstrate key specifications including a 10° maximum slope capability, 200mm obstacle clearance, and 4-hour battery runtime, with sales scheduled for the first half of 2026.
Hyundai Motor Group Robotics LAB Vice President Dong Jin Hyun emphasized MobED's transformative potential, stating: "Beyond a simple mobility platform, MobED offers a next-generation solution adaptable to diverse industries and everyday life. MobED will set new standards in the global robotics market and accelerate a future where humans and robots coexist."
The platform's modular architecture enables flexible integration with industry-specific top modules, supporting applications across delivery services, security patrols, research, and video production. This versatility stems from MobED's ability to operate seamlessly both indoors and outdoors, with an optimization-based control algorithm inspired by multi-joint robotics ensuring stability on uneven terrain and reliable navigation over obstacles like curbs.
Following its iREX 2025 debut, MobED received recognition at CES 2026 where it won the Best of Innovation Award in Robotics. The platform's commercialization journey accelerated with Hyundai's March 2026 announcement of the "MobED Alliance," a collaborative ecosystem bringing together component suppliers, public agencies, and robotics solution specialists to accelerate domestic commercialization in Korea.
As Hyundai Motor Group Robotics LAB prepares for its Automation World 2026 (AW2026) showcase in Seoul, the MobED Alliance represents a strategic shift from global demonstration to concrete commercialization. This ecosystem model aims to establish a sustainable business framework for supplying MobED to both B2B and B2G markets, positioning Korea's robotics industry for enhanced global competitiveness.
The MobED platform's technical specifications and modular design reflect Hyundai's automotive-grade engineering heritage, with the company positioning it as a solution that "fuses practicality with sophistication" while redefining mobile robotics capabilities. The platform's development timeline—from CES 2022 concept to iREX 2025 production unveiling—demonstrates Hyundai's commitment to transitioning robotics from experimental to commercially viable solutions within a four-year timeframe.
