Vector Institute Opens 2026 Applied Machine Learning Internship Applications
The Vector Institute has officially opened applications for its Applied Machine Learning Internship program for Fall 2026, targeting students and recent graduates in Toronto, Ontario. The paid internship runs from September 8 through December 18, 2026, with an application deadline of May 28, 2026 at 1:00 PM ET.
According to the official internship page, the program specifically prioritizes self-identified Black and Indigenous students or recent graduates from Canadian post-secondary institutions. This hiring preference aligns with the Ontario Human Rights Code special program criteria.
Interns will work on developing reusable software to apply and scale machine learning research breakthroughs. The work involves building reference applications, model templates, and open-source software using public and private datasets. Participants collaborate directly with Vector's professional staff, AI developers, and industry sponsors on actual implementation projects.
The compensation structure offers $25 per hour. Positions can be structured as full-time (36.25 hours per week) or part-time (20 hours per week). Selected interns may have opportunities to continue into the Winter 2027 academic term.
Technical requirements include Python programming experience, knowledge of machine learning and statistics, and analytical problem-solving abilities. Preferred skills include experience with PyTorch, TensorFlow, CUDA, and data engineering with messy real-world data. Experience with SLURM systems programming and industry software engineering is considered an asset.
The program includes the IMPACT Mentorship Program, where interns are matched with AI experts at Vector sponsor organizations. Past mentors have included professionals from Cohere, Scotiabank, and Roche. Interns also gain access to research talks, commercialization sessions, and networking within Canada's AI ecosystem.
Applications require a cover letter and resume addressed to Enoch To, Program Coordinator, Research Operations & Academic Partnerships. All interviews are currently being conducted remotely to ensure accessibility for applicants.
Black and Indigenous interns who are beginning or continuing their studies at a Canadian post-secondary institution will be eligible to apply for a $1,500 award upon completion to help offset education costs.
The recruitment process itself uses AI-based tools for screening applications, which Vector notes in its job posting (ironic, given the program's focus on human development in AI). Any data collected is handled according to Vector's External Privacy Policy and Use of AI-Based Tools in Recruitment and Selection Policy.
For those who don't self-identify as Black or Indigenous, Vector still encourages applications from racialized persons, women, persons with disabilities, and 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals. The organization states it's committed to workforce development in AI and building a diverse ecosystem.
Previous interns have reported gaining practical experience that translates directly to job interviews. Instead of explaining theory, they can discuss what they helped implement. The Demo Day presentation opportunity lets participants showcase their work to the AI community.
Whether this internship actually moves the needle on diversity in Canada's AI sector remains to be seen. The $25/hour rate is competitive for Toronto, but the geographic requirement limits participation to Canadian institutions. Still, for qualified applicants in the target demographic, it's a legitimate pathway into the industry.
The real question isn't whether the program exists—it's whether enough qualified candidates will apply before May 28. Vector has built the infrastructure; now it needs the talent to fill it.
