Neverness to Everness Developers Address AI Backlash, Promise Asset Reworks

Hotta Studio acknowledges limited generative AI use in background assets and commits to reworking flagged content following community backlash and sponsorship withdrawals.

The open-world gacha title Neverness to Everness has become a lightning rod for industry debate, though not for its supernatural setting or gameplay mechanics. Shortly after its April 29, 2026 launch, players began flagging in-game assets displaying visual characteristics commonly associated with generative AI tools. Posters, billboards, environmental textures, and portions of cutscenes drew scrutiny, with some comparisons being made to imagery from the anime film Weathering with You.

The situation escalated when prominent streamer and VTuber Ironmouse publicly terminated her sponsorship with the game. According to her statement, her team had specifically inquired whether AI-generated content was used in development and were allegedly told there was none at all. Several voice actors also began distancing themselves from the project, including Maggie Elise, who announced they would not continue working with the game if generative AI usage was not addressed.

For many observers, the core issue wasn't the technology itself but whether Hotta Studio had been fully transparent about how it was being deployed. The studio's official global account eventually released a public statement addressing the controversy directly.

"Neverness to Everness is built on human creativity. The characters, stories, and world you experience are the work of artists, writers, and designers. AI-assisted tools were used only on a small number of background and environmental assets, not on the characters or stories that define this game," the statement read, as reported by Niche Gamer.

The developers acknowledged they are already reviewing and reworking flagged assets, specifically naming "Clear Skies in Summer" and "Pink Paws Heist." The statement concluded with an invitation for continued feedback: "Your feedback shapes this game, so please keep it coming. We're listening, and we're committed to delivering the quality you deserve."

What complicates this situation is that earlier pre-launch interviews had already mentioned limited AI use for atmospheric renders and experimental concept work. At the time, developers insisted that core art and character content would never involve AI, but many players now feel that distinction wasn't communicated clearly enough. The gap between what was disclosed and what players expected to see has created a trust deficit that a single statement cannot easily repair.

Community reaction has been predictably fractured. Some players appreciate the relatively quick response and argue that limited AI usage in background elements doesn't outweigh the game's strengths, especially since many still enjoy its gameplay, world design, and free-to-play systems. Others remain deeply skeptical, questioning whether the full extent of AI involvement has actually been disclosed.

Independent reporting from GoSugamers notes that several commenters questioned why Hotta Studio is only addressing two specific artworks, both of which are the most highlighted in the controversy. If the studio doesn't acknowledge other lesser-talked-about AI-generated content, critics argue it might be a knee-jerk reaction rather than a comprehensive cleanup.

Beyond the two assets mentioned, a cutscene has been particularly dissected for AI-like elements. If true, this would heavily contradict Hotta's statement that generative tech was only used on "small-scale" background content. Many are convinced the studio is attempting to downplay the scale of its AI usage, with not only in-game content appearing suspicious to some, but also advertisements circulating on social media platforms.

Neverness to Everness is currently available for PC, PlayStation 5, and mobile (Android, iOS), with macOS support also confirmed. The game features open-world, "GTA-like" gameplay mechanics wrapped in a supernatural aesthetic that initially drew significant attention before the AI controversy dominated discourse.

Right now, the title finds itself in the middle of a much bigger conversation happening across the gaming industry. AI tools are becoming more common in development pipelines, but players are also becoming far more sensitive to how and when those tools are used. And as this situation shows, transparency might end up mattering just as much as the technology itself (or at least, it matters more than most studios seem to realize).

The physical reality of this controversy plays out in how players interact with the game now. Every billboard they scroll past, every texture they examine, every cutscene they watch carries the weight of suspicion. It's like trying to enjoy a meal while wondering if the ingredients were sourced ethically—you can still eat, but the experience is fundamentally altered by the doubt.

Whether the reworked assets will satisfy the community remains uncertain. Some players are convinced that Hotta Studio is attempting to downplay the scale of its AI usage, and the fact that only two specific assets were named suggests a targeted response rather than a comprehensive audit. If other AI-generated content exists in less visible areas, the controversy could reignite with new findings.

The voice actor departures add another layer of complexity. When talent publicly distances themselves from a project, it signals to other industry professionals that the studio's practices may be problematic. This creates a potential talent drain that could affect future projects, regardless of whether the AI usage was technically within acceptable bounds.

Ironmouse's sponsorship withdrawal carries particular weight given her platform size and influence. Her decision wasn't made lightly, and the fact that her team specifically asked about AI usage before signing suggests this was a known consideration for major content creators. Other streamers and influencers may now approach similar partnerships with heightened scrutiny.

From a business perspective, Hotta Studio faces a delicate balancing act. They need to maintain player engagement while addressing legitimate concerns about transparency. The free-to-play model means player retention is critical, and alienating a significant portion of the community could impact long-term revenue. At the same time, completely removing all AI-assisted content may not be feasible without significant development resources.

The statement's promise to "keep listening" suggests the studio recognizes this is an ongoing conversation rather than a one-time fix. Whether they follow through with comprehensive disclosure or continue with targeted responses will determine if trust can be rebuilt.

Whether players actually accept the distinction between "background assets" and "core content" remains the real question. The industry is still figuring out where the line should be drawn, and Neverness to Everness is now a case study in what happens when that line gets blurred.
